Mediation Services
I offer mediation of all types of disputes and am a registered neutral with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution for general civil matters. However, my mediation practice is currently centered on the following areas, several of which are described in greater detail below:
- Commercial and business disputes
- Eldercare issues
- Education disputes
- Employment disputes
- Personal injury cases
- Landlord/tenant disputes
- Debtor/creditor disputes
- Inheritance issues
Commercial and Business Disputes
Mediation can be particularly effective for resolving commercial and business disputes that are otherwise headed for or already in litigation. It can also be useful for resolving long-standing issues that are interfering with a business relationship. For example, if you are a supplier and have gotten into a dispute with a long-term customer over payment, mediation can be an effective way to resolve the dispute in a way that will allow you to continue your business relationship. By contrast, if the dispute goes to litigation, the odds of your retaining that customer are slim regardless of the outcome of the litigation. If your case has already gone to litigation, mediation might represent the best hope you have to salvage your business relationship, or if that is not important, may allow you to resolve the matter more quickly and less expensively. Although the focus of my mediations is always on facilitating the negotiations between the parties, I do have commercial litigation experience and can provide evaluative feedback to parties if they feel that will help them.
Edlercare Mediation
Eldercare mediation involves helping older Americans and their families work through conflicts that have arisen regarding their care and related issues. Typical conflicts can involve health care, home maintenance, disputes between residents and their long-term care facility or other residents, day to day financial affairs, continuing to drive versus access to alternative transportation, continuing to work versus retiring, inheritance issues, division or sale of family farms or businesses, caregivers and caregiver support, family member responsibilities, end of life arrangements, and many others. This is an area where facilitative mediation can be extremely helpful. Because many of these issues are highly personal, my emphasis in this type of mediation is normally on facilitating communication and negotiation between the parties.
Education Disputes
Education dispute mediation involves any type of conflict surrounding education and the educational system. This can include conflicts between teachers and administrators, teachers and teachers, students and teachers, students and administrators, parents and teachers, parents and administrators, administrators and school boards, and so on. The disputes involved can range from settling a conflict between two teachers arguing over school supplies to helping parents and school administrators negotiate an educational plan for a special needs student.
Services I do not provide:
At this time, I am not mediating divorce cases, although I may add that type of mediation to my practice in the future.
It is also important to note what mediation services are and their limits. Mediators never provide legal or financial advice to the parties to a mediation, even if they also happen to be an attorney or accountant.
If you have a dispute you think may benefit from mediation and would like to hire me as your mediator, please call me at 770-535-1011 or send me an e-mail at alex@alexhalow.com.
